Maddux snaps . . . but not skid
MIAMI — The latest episode of the Cubs’ theatre of the absurd featured an angry Greg Maddux attacking a water cooler with a bat Wednesday at Dolphin Stadium.
No truth to the rumor the water cooler claimed it was only going for its helmet.
Maddux’s rare display of anger occurred in the sixth inning of a 9-3 loss to Florida, the 18th loss in the last 22 games for the reeling Cubs.
“Yeah, I was a little upset,” Maddux said.
Manager Dusty Baker said a five-run fifth inning frustrated Maddux after he had retired the first two hitters.
“He was upset he made a couple of mistakes, and that’s uncharacteristic of him too,” Baker said. “That’s how everyone feels right now. They’re busting their butts. Just ain’t getting it done.”
Getting swept by one of the worst teams in baseball–one coming off a seven-game losing streak–left the Cubs a season-low 10 games below .500. They’re 5-18 in May with a NL-worst .231 batting average. After starting out 5-0, Maddux has lost four straight decisions.

If there’s a haunting sense of deja vu about the Cubs, there’s a good reason for it.
