Fukudome another bad signing for Cubs

Cubs Suck News — By webmaster on Thursday, December 13, 2007

Oh no Cub Haters… I hate to see what you all are going to do with this name.  Find us a nickname please for the Cubs latest signing, Kosuke Fukudome.  This was a terrible deal for the Cubs in my opinion.  The guy is 30 years old, has no experience playing in the Majors, and they give him $12 mil per year for 4 years.  Ouch.  Typical Cub move though I guess.  Their strategy is clearly to outbid the rest of the league for mediocre talent.  According to ESPN 1000:

Fukudome was just intrigued by the Cubs, and liked the idea of being their first Japanese player.

I’d be intrigued too by the circus act the Cubs put out there each year.  How long before Cub faithful are calling for Fuku’s head?  Let’s take a look at some projections courtesy of RotoAuthority.

  • They compiled averages from three different, reliable, projection sites.
  • The average projection is around .288-21-81-95-7

That’s solid.  But $13mil per solid?  That is more than Derek Lee and I swear he can perform better than that.  In fact, those almost look like Jacque Jones numbers don’t they?

Fact is… BAD SIGNING!

p.s. - It’s “koh-skay foo-koo-DOUGH-may” as Bleed Cubbie Blue points out.

How is .288/21/81 Jones numbers? His projected SLG is .504, which is phenomenal for a #2 hitter (which is what he will be). And you forgot to mention his OBP is projected to be .401, which is what we signed him for. He was an on base machine in Japan.

Now, I’m not going to act like this is some amazing signing, because I’ve never watched Fukudome outside of the WBC. But it’s certainly a good one, looking at all the teams who were after him. 12M for one of the most sought after free agents in this market is great.

A fun little tid-bit: The White Sox offered Fukudome 14M per year, but was spurned for lesser money to play for the Cubs. Good stuff.

That’s the very first thing I thought about when I saw his name, GoBrewers. I’d be willing to bet Harry Caray would have a field day with that name had he been around for this!

I don’t know what piece of crap team(White(Sox)Trash or the Rube-Goober State of Misery Cardinals) you root for. Neither team will sniff the playoffs this year. Daryl Kile…..dead….Josh Hancock…dead….chances of Cardinal or Sox fans having any class or a proper haircut or all of their teeth….dead.
